Ġurmāŷ was a fortress on the Duero frontier, with a castle from the 9th century, that changed hands several times with the Christian kingdoms and that al-Ḥakam II had rebuilt in 965 to shield Medinaceli. The final Christian conquest is dated 1059 in the article on the castle and 1060 in the one on the village; the village itself grew up later, below the fortress.
