The stronghold of ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣūn, who settled here in 880 when he rebelled against the emir of Córdoba and held out for more than fifty years, until ʿAbd al-Raḥmān III took it on 19 January 928. The best preserved part is the Mozarabic church cut into the rock, from the late 9th or early 10th century.
