al-Munastīr, "the monastery", a word of Latin origin, was an important town of the Huelva hills, where a mosque was raised inside the castle in the 9th and 10th centuries over Roman and Visigothic remains. It fell to the Christians in 1230 and was Portuguese first, then Castilian.
