ʿAbd al-Raḥmān III had it built in 955 over an earlier fortress, and it reached its height under Jayrān, first king of the taifa of Almería (1012 to 1028). Its enclosures above the city are open to visitors; the castle at the highest end was built by the Catholic Monarchs after the conquest of 1489.
