Founded in 955 by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān III as the port of the Caliphate, Al-Mariyya became in the 11th century the greatest harbour and shipyard of al-Andalus, exporting silk and receiving ships from Egypt and Italy. Its Alcazaba is one of the largest in the peninsula.
