Visigothic kingdom
Santa María de Melque
Today: San Martín de Montalbán, Spain
- Years
- 601–711
- Role
- Monastic complex in the montes de Toledo
A monastic complex raised in open country south of the kingdom's capital, with its church, its outbuildings and the dams that held back the water of the gullies on either side. Its dating is disputed and straddles the conquest: radiocarbon on a sample of the original plaster gives the range 668 to 729. It is one of the best preserved early medieval buildings in the peninsula, and it can be visited.
