A Celtiberian oppidum allied to Numantia in the Celtiberian wars, on a sandstone crag more than twelve hundred metres up, between the head of the Duero and the valley of the Tagus. It was a Roman municipium, most likely from the reign of Tiberius, with two forums, one Julio-Claudian and one Flavian, baths, an aqueduct and a possible theatre. Its wealth came from sheep and from the iron of its district.
