The Iberian oppidum of Arse, on the castle hill, became in time Roman Saguntum. Its siege by Hannibal, while it was an ally of Rome, was the event that set off the Second Punic War. Its trade is documented from the 6th century BCE, and of the imperial city there remains the theatre cut into the hillside, below the castle.
