A Tartessian or Phoenician colony first and a Carthaginian one after, it passed to Rome at the end of the 2nd century BCE, when its people were counted among the Turduli. Augustus raised it to a municipium, which is where the name Myrtilis Iulia comes from. Its Roman fabric is today largely reused in the castle and kept in the town museum.
