Paulus Fabius Maximus founded it in the name of Augustus in 13 BCE, beside the Miño, and it was the head of one of the three judicial districts of Gallaecia. Its baths were built at the same time as the town. The wall that rings it whole, raised in the 3rd century, is the only one in the empire to survive complete around its entire circuit.
