It began about 29 BCE as the camp of the Legio VI Victrix, which helped Augustus in the war against the Astures and Cantabri and stayed here almost a century, watching the passes of the cordillera and the gold workings of the northwest. At the end of the 1st century the Legio VII Gemina moved in and made Legio its permanent base until the early 5th century, giving the city of today its name.
