The Legio IV Macedonica founded it between the years 15 and 13 BCE, at the end of the Cantabrian wars and possibly over an earlier hillfort, in the most populous Cantabrian country and with no privileged rank. It was the most important of the nine Roman towns of Cantabria, and through the last third of the 1st century and all the 2nd its people held office in the administration of Tarraconensis.
