The capital of the Ilergetes, whose chiefs Indibilis and Mandonius were subdued in 206 BCE and died in the rising of 195. Pompey's legates, Afranius and Petreius, chose it as their base for the defence of Hispania in 49 BCE and kept five legions here; the campaign Caesar fought against them is among the best told of the civil war.
