The island lived in the Phoenician orbit and then the Carthaginian until Rome destroyed Carthage. The Scipios besieged it during the Second Punic War, and soon after it joined the Romans of its own will as a civitas foederata, which let it keep its own laws and its Punic culture well into the principate. Under the Flavians it was Municipium Flavium Ebusitanum, and from those centuries come the wool, figs, wine and salt that the Roman historians name.
