Complutum is named as early as 80 BCE, in a newly conquered Carpetania that was a crossing of roads. The city was built in the 1st century on the Henares plain, at the foot of the cerro del Viso from which its people came down: the eastern quarter in the 20s or 30s, the western in the 60s, with fifteen decumani and sixteen cardines over some forty-eight hectares. It was rebuilt thoroughly in the 3rd century and came to hold between ten and fifteen thousand people.
