On a Punic town of the bay, the Roman senate founded Colonia Libertinorum Carteia in 171 BCE for four thousand sons of Roman soldiers and Hispanic women, the first Latin colony known outside Italy. Its harbour looked out on the Strait and the route to North Africa. It has lain empty since the 7th century, and the site is walked today between the mouth of the Guadarranque and the refinery.
