The eastern gate of Roman Carmo, at the end of the cardo maximus and on the line of the Via Augusta, raised as a triumphal arch rather than a defence. Of the original work, which architectural parallels date to the time of Augustus or Tiberius, there remain the wall faces that run down to the ridge, two pilasters in relief, part of the two semi-octagonal towers and the stair with its vault. The facade seen today is neoclassical, of 1796 to 1800.
