Augustus founded it around 16 BCE over a native settlement, after the region was finally pacified, and Pliny and Ptolemy give it as the capital of the Bracari, the Celtic tribe whose name it took. Under the Flavians it received municipal status and gave its name to the conventus Bracarensis. After Diocletian's reform it was capital of the new province of Gallaecia, split off from Tarraconensis.
