A port town born at the end of the 2nd century BCE, heir to the Bastulo-Punic settlement of Baelo, which lived on tuna fishing, salting and garum and was the harbour that linked with Tingis. The emperor Claudius gave it the rank of municipium and the name it is known by. A tidal wave ruined much of the town in the second half of the 2nd century, and the site keeps its forum with the 1st-century paving, the basilica, four temples, the theatre and the salting works.
