A dam held to be Roman and thought to have been begun in the 1st century BCE, at the foot of the Sierra de Carija, five kilometres north of Mérida. It survives because it never fell out of use, for irrigation and for bathing. It has been said to supply the city through the Milagros aqueduct, though other studies dispute that, since the Romans did not usually bring town water from reservoirs.
