The ground for the chariot races, raised outside the walls in the early 1st century, a few decades after the city was founded, on a plan some 440 metres long by 115 wide. It was one of the largest in the empire after the Circus Maximus in Rome, and is thought to have stayed in use into the 6th century. Its foundations are what remain, but it is one of the few circuses whose whole plan can be seen.
