Capital of the conventus Asturicensis

Founded about 14 BCE as the camp of the Legio X Gemina, at the start of the 1st century it grew into a civil town and became the head of the conventus Asturicensis, in Tarraconensis. It sits on a hill commanding everything from the mountains of León to the flats of the Páramo, and through the 1st and 2nd centuries it carried great weight from controlling the gold workings of the northwest.
