Augustus founded the city in 14 BCE as Colonia Augusta Firma Astigi, beside the Genil, and it was the head of one of the four judicial districts of Baetica. Its wealth was olive oil: amphorae stamped with the name Astigi turn up in Rome, in eastern Gaul, on the Rhine, in Britannia and as far as Volubilis. Little of its grid and its mosaics is on view, and what has been excavated is kept in the town museum.
