The town was founded in the 1st century, probably under Claudius, though archaeology shows a sizeable population here already in the time of Augustus. It was granted the rank of civitas about the years 44 and 45, and lived on the crossroads that joined it to Augusta Emerita and on the quartz and gold of the sierra. In the 4th century it was thoroughly rebuilt; between the 5th and the 9th it emptied, and its stones ended up in the churches of the district.
