On a Bastetanian Iberian oppidum there was established, as has long been suggested, a colony of legionary veterans in the second half of the 1st century BCE. Pliny records its standing as a Roman town with the honour of ius Italicum. Christian tradition puts a bishop's seat here from the year 47, that of Saint Torquatus, one of the Seven Apostolic Men.
