A Phoenician foundation, perhaps of the 7th century BCE, on a hill beside the Lucus estuary, which passed later into Carthaginian hands and made itself the staging post for Atlantic sailing. Pliny the Elder records that it had a temple of Melqart. After the fall of Carthage it stayed with the Mauretanian kings, and Juba II rebuilt it.
