Between four and five thousand chamber tombs cut into the hillside, each with its entrance shaft and its burial chamber sealed with a slab, used as family vaults. The archaic cremation graves at the foot of the slope are of the second quarter of the 6th century BCE, and burials continue from the 5th century into Roman times. The grave goods were modest, with hundreds of terracotta figures. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1999 and has a museum of its own over the site.
