A cave in the north of the island, above Cala Sant Vicent, turned into a Punic sanctuary of the goddess Tanit in the 5th century BCE. It is the best known Punic cave sanctuary of the Pityusic islands: a rectangular bronze plaque with a late Punic text was found in it, and out of its chambers came the hundreds of terracotta busts of the goddess now spread across the island's museums.
