A Phoenician city on the mainland, facing the island of Gadir, lived in without a break from the 8th century to the end of the 3rd BCE. It had three walls one after another, the first with a V-shaped ditch twenty metres wide, and a Punic river port, the largest excavated in the Mediterranean. About a thousand square metres of houses and streets of the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE can be walked; the 8th-century levels lie seven to nine metres below.
