A town of Punic origin at a strategic point of the bay of Algeciras, whose casemate wall follows the Punic-Hellenistic manner also recorded at Doña Blanca and at Cartagena. Manuel Pellicer put its origin in the 3rd century BCE, though the campaigns of 1965 to 1970 found Iberian levels in the monumental quarter. In 171 BCE Rome made it the Colonia Libertinorum Carteia, the first Latin colony outside Italy.
