The Catholic Monarchs took the wide territory of Níjar in 1489, in the campaign that won them Almería, Baza and Guadix. In the 16th century it was never resettled because of the risings; under Carlos III's coastal defence regulations castles went up along its shore, and new villages could settle behind them.
