Marbella surrendered to Castile without a fight on 11 June 1485; the Catholic Monarchs made it a city, and the Plaza de los Naranjos was laid out on Castilian lines. Sugar cane spread along its coast from 1644, and in the 17th century the Fuerte de San Luis was built, its battery finished in 1752 and blown up in the Peninsular War.
