The reddish rammed-earth fortress of Guadix, enlarged under the Naṣrids and abandoned after the conquest of 1489. Its date is uncertain: the article places it around the 11th century and elsewhere says it was begun around the 10th under the Zīrids. Partly destroyed in the 16th century and later restored, it keeps its square keep in two crenellated stages.
