Founded in 802 by ʿAmrūs ibn Yūsuf for the emir al-Ḥakam I as a stronghold on the Ebro against the Basques, Tuṭīla was the birthplace of the Jewish scholar Abraham ibn Ezra. Alfonso I of Aragon took it in 1119.
