The first enclosure, the Villa, the oldest and grandest, which with the citadel made the town a frontier stronghold. Its date is not precise: the article attributes it to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān III and places it in the 9th and 10th centuries, with the semicircular towers, of the 9th, as the oldest part; the albarrana towers are Christian, 13th and 14th century. Long stretches can be seen in calles Carnicerías, Corredera del Cristo, Charcón, Entretorres and Ronda del Cañillo.
