Šantara was the most important town of the territory of al-Ušbūna after the city itself; the 10th-century geographer al-Bakrī lists it among the towns that depend on Lisbon, near the sea, and praises its apples. Its castle, on the crest of the hills, was handed to Alfonso VI in 1093 with Lisbon and Santarém, went back to the Almoravids and surrendered to Afonso Henriques in 1147.
