The fortress above the Sado, one of the main Atlantic ports south of the Tagus, whose defences the Muslims strengthened from 715. 20th-century excavations show a 12th-century Almohad castle of rammed earth; the pentagonal tower dates from the Almohad return of 1191, before the final conquest of 1217. Rebuilt from 1289 and later a convent, it is now a pousada, heavily restored and partly in imitation rammed earth.
