The 9th-century Muslim fortress that gave Calatayud its origin and its name, the most important of the five castles joined by almost four kilometres of walls; around 862 Muḥammad I had the town's defences enlarged. Philip V had it dismantled in 1705 and the French and the Carlist wars reworked it, so it is much altered. It keeps two enclosures and four towers, two of them octagonal with vaulted floors.
