First a watchtower that the Muslims built at the end of the 10th century, under al-Ḥakam II, to guard the Henares road between Toledo and Zaragoza, first mentioned in 1009; the fortified village of Qalʿat ʿAbd al-Salām grew around it and left Roman Complutum almost empty. The Christians took it in 1118 and it was abandoned from the 13th century. On the Cerro del Castillo two restored towers still stand, with remains of others and of the wall.
