Founded in 825 by the emir ʿAbd al-Raḥmān II as the capital of the Segura valley, Mursiya grew rich on irrigated farming, silk and paper. It was the seat of Ibn Mardanīš, the "Wolf King", in the 12th century, and Castile annexed it after the Mudéjar revolt in 1266.
