The citadel that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān III ordered built in 956 over the ruins of Roman Suel, by the mouth of the Fuengirola river, to strengthen the coastal defences; in the 12th century the Almoravids enclosed it with eight stretches of wall and towers, entered through a horseshoe-arched gate. Today it is visited and used for cultural events.
