A double-walled fortress on a hilltop of the Sierra Palmitera, 579 metres up, named by 10th-century Arab authors such as Ibn Ḥayyān and al-Rāzī, tied first to Bobastro and later to Marbella. It watched the coast and the hills until it surrendered to Castile in 1485, after the fall of Ronda. Its rubble walls with square towers, two gates and several cisterns survive.
