A ruined rectangular castle in the old town, also called the alcazaba of Marbella. Its medieval fabric goes back to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān III, who wanted a base on the coast against the rebellion of Ibn Ḥafṣūn, though archaeology increasingly points to a Roman origin; it defended the Naṣrid kingdom until the surrender of 11 June 1485. In the 19th century it served as the cemetery.
