Ŷayyān was the head of an agricultural kūra famous for silk, olive oil and wheat, guarded by a hilltop fortress that later became the castle of Santa Catalina. It passed to Castile in 1246, when the Naṣrid emir surrendered it to Fernando III in exchange for peace.
