An elongated enclosure about a hundred metres long with fourteen square towers and a gate between two towers with horseshoe arches, one of the best preserved Andalusi castles in Spain. Its date is disputed: a plaque of al-Ḥakam II places it in 967 or 968, but excavations early this century put it in the late 11th or early 12th century, because its towers and rammed-earth walls are not Umayyad. The round keep is Castilian, from 1466.
