The citadel of Vélez, built in the 10th century and enlarged in the 14th and 15th, one of the most important of the Naṣrid kingdom, at the top of the town above the plain and the Axarquía. The surviving original walls are 13th and 15th-century rammed earth; the horseshoe-arched Puerta Real and the keep were rebuilt in the early 1970s.
