The ḥiṣn that Lubb ibn Muḥammad had built in 897 and that Yūsuf al-Muẓaffar turned into the governor's palace between 1045 and 1082; Count Armengol VII took it in 1105 and named it castell Formós. Of the late 9th-century fortress the north front survives best, with its two corner towers in good condition, one over seven metres high. It stands in ruins above the town, beside the Pla d'Almatà.
